A portable washroom cabin is the one thing on a site that everybody uses and nobody plans for. It gets ordered last, placed wherever there is space left, and then becomes the first complaint in the labour meeting. This guide walks through the types available, the fittings that actually matter, and the water and drainage decisions that decide whether the unit works for two years or two months. MK Portable Cabin has supplied washroom and toilet cabins to 500+ clients across Mumbai, Thane, Navi Mumbai and the rest of India from our fabrication unit in Mumbra, Thane.

What a portable washroom cabin actually is

A portable washroom cabin is a factory-built, fully plumbed toilet and bathing unit that arrives on a trailer and is set down on your site in one piece. It is not a plastic chemical toilet. The shell is either a steel-framed cabin with PUF or EPS wall panels, or an FRP moulded unit, and inside it carries the pan, the flush, the wash basin or tap, the ventilation and the light point already fitted and tested. Because the plumbing is done at the factory, your site work reduces to one water line in and one drain line out.

The practical difference from a chemical toilet is service. A chemical unit needs a tanker visit every few days. A plumbed washroom cabin connected to a soak pit or the municipal line runs on its own. On a six-month or two-year project, that difference is the whole decision.

The main types, and who each one suits

Four shapes cover almost every requirement we quote in Mumbai.

TypeTypical sizeWhat is insideBest suited to
Single WC unit4×4 / 4×6One Indian or Western pan, flush, tap, ventSecurity post, small shop, farmhouse corner
WC + bath unit6×4 / 8×4Pan plus a separate bathing area with a drainSite engineers, staff quarters, labour camps
Multi-seat toilet block10×8 to 20×103 to 8 cubicles, common wash trough, urinalsLabour camps, large construction sites, events
Toilet attached to an office cabinAdded to 20×8 and aboveOne WC partitioned off inside the office cabinSite offices where staff should not walk to a block

A rough planning figure used on Indian sites is one WC seat for every 20 to 25 workers, and separate units for women workers wherever the headcount justifies it. If your site has 80 labourers, a single 4×4 is going to fail by week two; a 10×8 four-cubicle block with a wash trough is the realistic answer.

Fittings that decide whether people actually use it

Most complaints about a washroom cabin trace back to four fittings, not to the cabin itself.

Ventilation. An exhaust fan plus a louvred vent is not optional in Mumbai humidity. Without airflow the cabin smells within days and the panels stay damp. Ask for a wall-mounted exhaust, not just a ceiling vent.

The floor and the slope. The floor should be anti-skid and must fall clearly towards the drain outlet. A flat floor holds water, and standing water is how a cabin floor starts to corrode from below. We cast the floor with the slope built in at the factory.

Door and latch. Use a door that will not swell — FRP or an aluminium-framed panel door, with a latch on the inside and a hasp outside. A plain plywood door in a wet cabin lasts one monsoon.

Water storage. If the site water supply is intermittent, a 500-litre tank on a stand beside the block is worth more than any other upgrade. Specify the tank platform at order time so the structure is designed to take it.

Water in, waste out: the part people forget

Every washroom cabin quotation should be read alongside two site questions. First, where does the water come from? A tap connection, a tanker fill point or a bore — each needs a different inlet arrangement, and a tanker-fed site needs the storage tank mentioned above. Second, where does the waste go?

In practice there are three answers. Connect to the municipal sewer line, which is cleanest where it is available. Dig a soak pit or septic tank on site, which is the common choice on construction plots and farmhouses and needs roughly a week of lead time before delivery. Or use a sealed holding tank below the unit that a tanker empties periodically — the right choice on a rocky plot or a short job where digging makes no sense.

Tell us which of the three applies before the cabin is built. The outlet position, the pipe diameter and the floor level all change with the answer, and changing them after delivery means cutting into a finished floor.

Where portable washroom cabins are being used

Construction sites remain the largest use, but the list has widened considerably. Farmhouses and weekend plots in Karjat, Palghar and Alibaug use single WC and bath units where building a masonry toilet is not worth the cost. Factory and warehouse compounds in Bhiwandi and Taloja add a unit near the loading bay so drivers and loaders are not walking through the plant. Schools and exam centres hire blocks for the exam season. Event grounds, wedding lawns and film shoots take multi-seat blocks for a few days at a time. Petrol pumps, nurseries and roadside outlets install permanent single units.

If your use is on that list, the shape of the unit is already fairly settled — the conversation is about size, fittings and how the waste is handled.

Keeping it running

A plumbed washroom cabin needs very little, but the little it needs is not optional. Clean the pan and floor daily with a non-acidic cleaner — strong acid attacks the joints and the floor coating. Check the exhaust fan monthly; a dead fan is the single most common cause of a cabin going bad. Clear the floor drain trap every month on a site where mud is tracked in. Inspect the water connection and the outlet joint before the monsoon and after it. And once a year, look at the external sealant along the base and the roof joint, and touch it up where it has pulled away.

Done properly, the same unit moves from one project to the next for years. Our portable cabin maintenance guide covers the wider routine for office and labour cabins as well.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take to get a portable washroom cabin in Mumbai?

For standard sizes we usually dispatch within a few working days of order confirmation; custom blocks with multiple cubicles take longer because the plumbing is laid out to your drawing. The bigger variable is usually your side — the soak pit or tank has to be ready before the unit lands.

Can a portable washroom cabin connect to a normal municipal drain?

Yes. We build the outlet to match whatever connection you have, whether that is a municipal line, a septic tank, a soak pit or a sealed holding tank. Tell us which one at order stage so the outlet position and pipe size are correct from the factory.

What is the difference between an FRP toilet and a PUF panel washroom cabin?

FRP units are moulded, lighter and very easy to shift, which suits short deployments and tight access. PUF panel cabins are steel-framed, sturdier, quieter in rain and keep the interior cooler, which suits units that will stay in one place for a long project or that sit alongside an office cabin.

How many toilet seats do I need for my labour strength?

Plan on roughly one seat per 20 to 25 workers, with separate provision for women workers. Send us your headcount and we will suggest a block configuration rather than you ordering several small units that cost more in total.

Do you deliver washroom cabins outside Mumbai?

Yes. Besides Mumbai, Thane and Navi Mumbai we regularly deliver to Bhiwandi, Panvel, Taloja, Kalyan, Dombivli, Pune and project sites in other states. Transport is quoted separately based on distance and site access.

Tell us your size and we will send a quote today

We do not publish a single rate for washroom cabins because the number moves with the size, the number of cubicles, the panel type and the fittings you choose — and a rate quoted without those details is useless to you. Send us the headcount, the plot location and how the waste will be handled, and we will come back with a written quotation and a delivery date.
