Portable toilet cabins fail for boring reasons — the tank was too small for the headcount, there was no water plan, or nobody agreed who empties it. Get those three right and the unit lasts years. Get them wrong and labour stops using it within a month.

Start from headcount, not from the cabin
The first number is how many people will use it per shift. That decides unit count, tank capacity and emptying frequency — everything else follows.
| People per shift | Suggested units | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Up to 15 | 1 unit | Single WC, adequate for a small team |
| 15–40 | 2 units | Consider separate units for staff and labour |
| 40–80 | 3–4 units block | Multi-unit cabin with common wash area |
| 80+ | Multi-unit block + separate washing | Plan drainage properly at this scale |

Indian pan, Western pan, or both
On most Indian construction sites, Indian pan units get used more and stay cleaner. For staff and engineer facilities, a Western pan is often expected. Many sites do best with a mix — and mixing costs nothing extra to specify at order stage.
Tank and drainage: the decision that matters most
Whatever you choose, decide the position of the cabin and the drainage route before delivery day. Moving a toilet cabin after the plumbing is done is a waste of a crane trip.
- Connected to site drainage / septic — the best option where available. No emptying schedule to manage.
- Below-floor holding tank — self-contained, needs emptying on a schedule. Size it for headcount or it overflows.
- External septic connection — good for long-duration sites; plan the pipe run before placing the cabin.
Water supply — the step people skip
A toilet cabin with no water plan is a locked cabin within a week. Options are an overhead tank on the cabin, a connection to the site line, or a nearby storage tank with a pump.
Include a tap, a health faucet and a wash basin in the specification. Small items, big difference in whether it gets used.

Build specification for a site toilet
- Floor: anti-skid tile or hard-wearing vinyl, with a proper slope to the drain
- Walls: insulated panel, washable internal finish
- Ventilation: louvre or exhaust fan — mandatory, not optional
- Door: outward opening, with a working latch
- Light point, and a fan point where used at night
- Roof overhang to keep rain off the door
Maintenance schedule — write it down and name a person
This is what actually determines whether the unit survives. Put it on paper at handover.
- Daily — cleaning, water check
- Weekly — drainage flow check, latch and ventilation check
- Monthly — tank level or emptying as per headcount, tap and faucet check
- Every six months — panel joint and floor slope check, repaint if needed

Portable Toilet Cabin for Sale: How to Compare Two Quotes Properly
Every portable toilet cabin for sale looks similar in a photograph, so buyers end up comparing only the number at the bottom of the quote. That is where the money is lost. Two quotes that differ by a few thousand rupees are usually describing two different cabins, and the difference shows up in the first monsoon.
Ask every seller to write these six lines into the quotation:
- Sheet gauge and type: pre-coated GI or plain CR sheet, and the thickness. A thinner sheet dents on the trailer and rusts at the fasteners.
- Frame section: MS square tube size and whether the base frame is galvanised or only painted. The base is what sits in water.
- Pan and trap: Indian pan, western WC or both, with the brand, plus a proper P or S trap. A missing trap is why a toilet smells from day one.
- Tank or outlet: an integrated bio-tank with its capacity in litres, a soak-pit connection, or a plain outlet you must connect yourself. This single line can change the price by a third.
- Floor and waterproofing: tiled floor over a treated base, with a slope towards the drain point.
- Ventilation: an exhaust vent or louvre on each cubicle, not just a gap above the door.
Also check what is not in the price: transport, unloading, plumbing connection and GST are quoted separately by many sellers, and together they can add a noticeable amount. Ask for a single delivered-and-installed figure so the comparison is honest.
We build these in our own Mumbra unit in 1, 2, 3, 4 and 6-seat layouts, and we put all six lines above in writing on every quotation. Send us your headcount and the drainage available at site, and you will have a written quote the same day.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many portable toilets for a construction site?
Start from headcount per shift. One unit up to about 15 people, two up to 40, a multi-unit block beyond that. Local site rules may specify a ratio — check before ordering.
Indian or Western pan for labour facilities?
Indian pan generally sees better use and stays cleaner on labour facilities. Western pan is usually expected for staff and engineer units. A mix is common.
How often does the tank need emptying?
It depends on tank size and headcount. Size the tank for your headcount at order stage and set the schedule at handover — do not wait to find out.
Can a toilet be attached to an office cabin?
Yes, we build office cabins with an attached toilet block. It changes the plumbing plan, so mention it when asking for a quote.
